Sri Lanka government re-establishes the Paddy Marketing Board
07 Aug, Colombo:
Sri Lanka government will officially re-establish the Paddy Marketing
Board with the patronage of the President Mahinda Rajapakse on
September 03.
All the assets and duties of the current Sri Lanka Agricultural Production Marketing Authority will be vested to the Paddy Marketing Board. The Paddy Marketing Board was once the major operator in rice market, but was closed later to liberalize the market. Most of the Government Paddy Stores around the country were later given to private sector for purposes like setting up garment factories etc.
Paddy Marketing Board will handle the government paddy-purchasing program since next Maha season. Agricultural Production Marketing Authority has already commenced the paddy purchasing in Ampara district for the Yala season and will continue it in other districts since next week.
The government is currently issuing 45,000 metric tons of paddy from government paddy stores to control the price of rice. Government still has 110,000 metric tons of paddy stored.
