Paddy cultivation enhanced in the Western Province
(May 30, 2008) Western Province Deputy Director of Agriculture I.U. Mendis said at the Colombo District Agricultural Committee meeting that the paddy cultivation in the Western Province has increased by around three fold this Yala season.
The Director further said that the escalation of rice prices were a disguised blessing.
Colombo district was a major wetland agricultural area of the country half a century ago. But the rapid industrialization changed the social infrastructure immensely and the farm lands were turned to non agricultural purposes of land use during the past few decades.
