Lanka Electricity Draft Bill to be taken up in Parliament on June 17
Sri Lanka Electricity Draft Bill to be taken up in Parliament on June 17. The proposed bill envisages doing away with the monopoly enjoyed by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and inviting the partnership of the private sector in power generation and distribution.
Many of CEB trade unions, political parties and civil organizations have dubbed the bill as a prelude to the privatization of the CEB and it comes in the wake of the agreement with India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to build a coal power plant in Sampoor.
NTPC and CEB are slated to set up a US $ 500 million coal power plant in Sampoor recently captured from Tamil Tigers hold. Thousands of residents of the village were displaced and barred from returning to their traditional villages, they are held up in refugee camps.
The employees of the CEB have threatened a countrywide strike if the government goes ahead with the CEB reforms Bill.
