Unprecedented price increase for milk powder
Milk food importing companies say that milk powder price could be raised again in the first quarter of the next year due to price hikes in international market and the depreciation of local currency.
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has permitted the milk powder companies to raise the prices by massive Rs. 80 upto Rs. 275 per 400 grams pack. However, almost all the milk powder companies have so far marked their prices below the government specified maximum price. This clearly shows the bias of the government towards the traders and the carelessness towards the consumers.
Meanwhile, the government owned Milco says it sells the Highland 400 grams pack for Rs. 180 losing around Rs. 15 per pack. However, only god knows where these low priced products are, especially the much-hyped welfare packs.
The government waived the 12% import tax on milk powder at the beginning of October as a measure to control further price increases. However, it failed to control the price escalation and we doubt government has stealthily
