Protest planned against Norochcholai coal plant
A multi-religious group against the proposed coal power plant in Norochcholai is organizing a massive protest on November 24th in front of the historic Thalawila Church.
Organizers say that the coal plant will result in farmers and fishermen being evicted from their traditional areas.
The Power and Energy Minister said recently that the area surrounding the proposed power plant would be declared a high security zone.
Despite claims that it is environmentally-friendly even by imposing taxes for the protection of the environment, this government is showing its inefficiency and incompetence by building a coal power plant that will destroy the nature, they alleged.
Farmers and fishermen of Norochcholai, who are yet to be noticed by the government, have upto now led a prosperous life, meeting the vegetable and protein needs of the consumers and adding to national productivity.
Therefore, organizers of the protest say that they will fight against the power plant that poses a threat to the environment as well as to the livelihood of the innocent villagers.
