CALL FOR ACTION: WSF Sri Lanka 2008

MONLAR in collaboration with Peoples Space Sri Lanka (Janavakasha/Jana Avakasham) calls upon all those in solidarity with the World Social Forum www.wsf2008.net to organise, mobilise and participate in actions consistent with the 2008 Theme: Act Together for Another World beginning January 21 2008 until January 26 2008.

Monlar, Peoples Space, the Plantation Sector Social Forum and other organisations are planning district, provincial and national-level events under the common theme: “A Better Sri Lanka is Possible!”

 

The sub-themes of WSF 2008 activities in Sri Lanka are:

  • No to War!
  • Stop Rising Cost of Living!
  • No to Capitalist Globalisation!

 

Peoples Space calls upon all those who oppose war, militarism and racism; neo-liberal attacks on living standards and livelihoods of the poor; and imperialism dressed up as globalisation to initiate, gather individuals, groups and movements, and join in actions across Sri Lanka between Saturday 21 January and Saturday 26 January.

 

A national convergence of peoples’ organisations, struggles and campaigns will take place in Colombo on Saturday 26 January from 9am – 5pm at Vihara Mahadevi Park (venue to be confirmed) as part of the Global Day of Mobilisation and Action.

 

This peoples’ assembly will include South Asian and national speakers, workshops and groups led by peoples movements to share struggles, discuss and analyse, and propose our alternatives on several issues including agriculture and fisheries sector, on environment including climate change, on women’s rights, on child rights, on trade unions, on plantation sector, on privatisation of natural resources, on peace and human rights, media and culture and much more. Cultural activities will take place throughout the day. Stalls for display and sale of artisinal products can be booked.

 

We appeal for the following:

  1. Inform us of your actions for us to share through the proposed WSF Sri Lanka website, email and media
  2. Display posters and other publicity materials consistent with WSF Sri Lanka theme in your districts
  3. Inform us of the numbers you can mobilise for January 26 (J26)
  4. Volunteer helpers for organisation of WSF Sri Lanka and on J26
  5. Bring posters, banners, exhibits, campaign materials etc. to decorate the Colombo venue
  6. Financial support for the logistical costs including assisting outstation participants with transport and accommodation

  • Sri Lanka discourages rice exports for the use of expatriates
    (JUne 13) Sri Lanka Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to a memorandum submitted by Ranjith Siyambalapitiya in his capacity as the Acting Minister of Finance and Planning to issue a Gazette notification specifying the minimum FOB price of a Metric Ton of rice which is being exported, to be Rs. 100,000 with effect from 10.06.2008.
  • Coca-Cola Urged to Close an Indian Plant to Save Water
    NEW DELHI — A leading environmental research group based here has asked Coca-Cola to consider shutting down a bottling plant in the drought-stricken state of Rajasthan, saying that the plant is depleting scarce water supplies. The recommendation came in a report released Monday by the organization, Energy and Resources Institute. The report was commissioned by Coca-Cola in 2006 in response to reports that pesticide residues had been found in its products.
  • Efforts to trade off land in Eastern Province behind the abrogation of ceasefire
    Sri Lanka Government suddenly decided to abrogate the ceasefire agreement (CFA) with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE). This CFA signed in 2002 was actually defunct since President Mahinda Rajapakse came into power in 2005. However, neither party of the CFA pushed to be the first to withdraw from it. The Government's notice to withdraw from the CFA came in an unexpected time and it did not catch much enthusiasm since it was in rags since many months and the war was raging in full throttle.
  • Doctors given a choice - Generic names or jail
    Beginning (January 1) doctors, both in the private and public sectors, will have to prescribe drugs under their generic names and explain to patients the advantages of prescribing drugs under generic names instead of trade names. This regulation is being implemented under the Private Medical Ordinance Act and Government Medical Ordinance Act.
